Abstract

Advances in neuroscience have made significant contributions to understanding the biological basis of human mental health. The relationship between brain function, neurotransmitters, and emotional regulation is key to understanding the emergence of mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and chronic stress. This study aims to examine the relationship between neuroscience and mental health, focusing on the brain's mechanisms for managing emotions. Using a literature review method, this study analyzed various scientific sources discussing the role of brain structures such as the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and limbic system in the process of emotional regulation. The results of the study indicate that the balance of activity between the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex is key in controlling emotional responses. Disrupted connectivity or imbalanced activity in these areas contributes to the emergence of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Furthermore, the concept of neuroplasticity suggests that the brain has the adaptive capacity to undergo positive changes through psychological and pharmacological interventions, as well as healthy lifestyle habits. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding brain mechanisms in developing strategies for the prevention and treatment of mental health.
